Questions to ask a music teacher in New Zealand
Instrument, exams, practice and NCEA Music. What to confirm before you hire a local teacher.
Music teaching is in person work: posture, tone and timing. FindTutor splits instruments so you do not get a violin teacher when you wanted piano. Open the right subject, for example piano, violin or singing, then search your city.
Fit
- Which instrument and which styles do you actually teach?
- Do you prepare Trinity, AMEB or other grades, or only repertoire?
- Can you support NCEA Music performance or composition?
- How much practice do you expect between lessons?
- Do parents sit in for young children?
Logistics
Confirm the studio address, parking, whether you need your own instrument, and what happens in school holidays. Ask how they report progress. A term package should still allow a trial lesson first.
Safety
For children, use the safety guide. A first lesson in a closed room with someone you have never met is a poor idea. Studios and school halls with other people around are easier to supervise.
