What private tutoring typically costs in New Zealand
Published rates vary widely. Here is how to read a price before you enquire.
There is no official price list for private tutoring in New Zealand. Some FindTutor profiles publish an hourly figure; many centres advertise a session rate; plenty say “contact us”. Treat any number on this site as a starting point copied from a public page, not a quote.
What usually changes the rate
- One-to-one versus small group or a franchise centre.
- NCEA and scholarship versus primary catch-up.
- Travel: a tutor coming to your home in Auckland often costs more than a studio lesson.
- Specialist instruments and driving instruction, which include equipment or vehicle costs.
Ask whether the rate includes GST, how long a session is (45, 60 or 80 minutes is common), and whether materials are extra. If a listing has no price, that is normal — reveal the phone or email and ask.
