Preparing for the first tutoring lesson
A short checklist so the first hour is diagnostic, not wasted.
The first in-person lesson should diagnose, not cram. Students who arrive with last week’s test, a school login, and a clear goal get more from the hour.
Bring
- Recent school reports or NCEA results notices.
- The current workbook or instrument (with reeds, strings or sports gear as needed).
- Any IEP, reader-writer, or medical notes the tutor should know about.
- A parent for the first ten minutes if the student is a child.
Agree the logistics
Confirm address, parking, who is home, and how you will pay. For children, agree pickup and that a parent or caregiver stays on site. See the safety guide.
