In-person vs online tutoring in New Zealand
When a Zoom tutor is enough, and when you should insist on meeting locally.
FindTutor focuses on in-person tutors because that is what the underlying listings emphasise: studios, centres, clubs and home visits across New Zealand. Online still has a place — especially in rural areas or for niche subjects.
Choose in-person when
- The student is in primary school and attention wanders on a screen.
- The subject is physical: music technique, sport, driving, swimming, dance.
- You want a local adult who can meet at a library or hall.
Online can be enough when
- The student is organised, senior, and needs exam technique.
- You live far from a specialist (for example, oboe or scholarship economics).
- Weather, illness or boarding school makes travel unreliable.
Many listings on this site mention both. Read the profile, then ask how they actually teach in your city. Distance notes on city pages (including the 10 km fallback) exist so smaller towns are not left with a blank page.
