How to choose a private tutor in New Zealand
What to ask before you book in-person lessons, from NCEA to music and sport.
Choosing a private tutor in New Zealand is less about finding a famous name and more about fit: subject, year level, location, and how the student actually learns. FindTutor is a directory of in-person listings — use it to shortlist, then do the human checks yourself.
Start with the goal
A Year 6 reading catch-up is not the same job as NCEA Level 3 calculus or Trinity piano. Ask the tutor what year levels they teach most, and whether they have taught your qualification (NCEA, Cambridge, IB, grade exams, NZTA licence stages).
In-person still matters
Video can work for some students. For handwriting, instrument posture, driving, swimming and many primary literacy sessions, being in the same room is faster. Search by city on FindTutor so you are not ringing tutors who only work in another island.
Questions worth asking
- Where do lessons happen — home, studio, school, or a public library?
- What do you charge, and is GST included?
- How do you report progress to parents?
- What happens if we need to cancel?
- For children: what police vetting or safety practices do you use?
